The Notre Dame Writing Supplement: We want to meet the real you.
We require applicants to submit the Notre Dame Writing Supplement in addition to the Common Application or Coalition Application. This form is available to registrants of either website and is submitted separately after the application. It must be submitted online.

The writing supplement gives us an opportunity to get to know you in a more personal way outside of your stats. So, let your personality shine, take risks, and remember that there is no right answer.

The Writing Supplement for first-year applicants seeking Fall 2020 enrollment includes the following directions:

The University of Notre Dame Writing Supplement consists of one (1) essay response to a required question and two (2) essay responses to questions you select from the options provided. In total, you will write three (3) essay responses. The word count is a maximum of 200 words per essay.

Please provide a response to the following question:

What excites you about the University of Notre Dame that makes it stand out from other institutions?

Please provide responses to TWO (2) of the following questions:

1. The founder of the University of Notre Dame, Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C., was only 28 when he established the University with the vision that it would become a "powerful means of doing good." We have always known that young people can be catalysts for change. What is one way that you have made an impact in your community?
2. If you were to bring a new friend to your hometown and give them a personal tour, what is a meaningful place you would show them?
3. Defend an unpopular opinion you hold.
4. Many high schools have books that are required reading. Thinking beyond the common examples, what book do you believe should be on your school's reading list and why?
